Turkmen Ersari Rug

The Ersari were one of many tribes of the Turkmen people who inhabited the area that is now part of Turkestan, Uzbekistan and northern Afghanistan. The principal motif used as a totem particularly in their main tent carpets, and in most Turkoman rugs is the ‘gul’, an octagonal medallion repeated the field.

This rug is believed to have come from the Barakat Ersari Cultural Survival Project, dedicated to providing educational opportunities to various ethnic groups associated with carpet weaving in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India and to preserve the earth’s environment.  Supporting the weavers while producing some of the finest rugs being made today. Read More

Afghan Turkmen Ersari Rug in original excellent condition. The colors on this rug are typical Ersari shades: navy blue, rust orange, bright red with some brown and ivory accents. The field background has multiple large medallions. There is a tribal border surrounding it.

In the center of each Gul there are Rams Horn Motives (Symbol of Power) and Eye Motives (Protection against the evil eye). The Gul itself is the common Turkmen gulli-gul used predominantly by the Ersari tribe. The identifying design feature in this gul is the ‘tre-foil’ or clover leaf.

This Turkmen Ersari Rug retains its original kilim ends and braided wool fringe.

Includes certificate of origin and authenticity.
