Description

End in the Beginning

The are two main component to this piece, one is the Basmala, which is the beginning of every chapter of the Quran (except the ninth) as well as the phrase said before a Muslim undertakes nearly every task. This was rendered in the Kufic style of Arabic Calligraphy, with the ‘Allah’ part of the phrase in Gold Leaf.

The Basmala (Arabic: بسملة‎ basmalah), also known by its incipit Bismillāh (Arabic: بِاسم الله‎, “In the name of God”, is the Islamic phrase bi-smi llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīmبِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ “In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful”.

The second component hidden behind the Basmala, is the Kaaba, in many ways symbolic of the beginning of Islam as well the End Goal for many Muslims.

Here is an in-progress picture of the Kaaba in the background:

The Kaaba (Arabic: أَلكَعْبَة‎ al-kaʿbah, “The Cube”), also referred as al-Kaʿbah al-Musharrafah (Arabic: أَلكَعْبَة أَلمُشَرَّفَة‎, the Holy Ka’bah), is a building at the center of Islam’s most important mosque, Al-Masjid Al-Ḥarām (Arabic: أَلمَسْجِد أَلحَرَام‎, The Sacred Mosque), in the Hejazi city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It is the most sacred site in Islam. It is considered by Muslims to be the Bayt Allāh (Arabic: بَيْت الله‎, “House of God”), and has a similar role to the Tabernacle and Holy of Holies in Judaism. Its location determines the qiblah (Arabic: قِبْلَة‎, direction of prayer). Wherever they are in the world, Muslims are expected to face the Kaaba when performing Salah (Arabic: صَلاة‎, Islamic prayer).

One of the Five Pillars of Islam requires every Muslim who is able to do so to perform the Hajj (Arabic: حَجّ‎, Greater Pilgrimage) at least once in their lifetime. Multiple parts of the hajj require pilgrims to make Tawaf (Arabic: طَوَاف‎, Circumambulation) seven times around the Kaaba in a counter-clockwise direction. Tawaf is also performed by pilgrims during the ‘Umrah (Arabic: عُمْرة‎, Lesser Pilgrimage). However, the most significant time is during the hajj, when millions of pilgrims gather to circle the building within a 5-day period.
