Persian Tinned Copper Ewer

An Antique Persian Silver on Copper Hand Wrought Ewer with Cover. Of flattened bulbous shape with long hand wrought baluster neck, hinged cover with acorn finial; swan shape spout with oval tip, and “S” scroll handle; raised on circular foot. These Persian Coffee Pots are hand engraved and chased with complex reserves framed with floral design on the sides, the spout made to resemble the head of a duck or other type of water fowl.

Persian ewer (aftaba), probably made in the eastern part of Persian empire (Khorasan) and presumably – at latest – in the first half of 18th century. Tinned copper, raised and turned. Nice floral roundels in two circular panels are framed by foliate patterns. The entire decoration is nicely enhanced by black substance (of organic origin). Stylized floral patterns engraved on the surface of ewer are clearly inspired by Moghul empire (India) naturalistic expression influences, but the very strict symmetry of stylized botanical designs (cypress, lotus, peony, palm) is telling proof about Persian provenance. The ewer could be even created during 17th century (Safavid Dynasty), but I am rather cautious in designating the piece as 17th century antique, as is often the case concerning the very old Islamic metalware.

A Persian Tinned Copper Ewer of incredible quality with tiny, intricately engraved detailed design of flowers and symbols all over. This is a museum quality piece in excellent condition, a unique find!
