Khanjar means dagger in Arabic. Jambiya are single curved daggers (as opposed to the khanjar dagger which usually has a double curve) that almost always have a double edge and often a medial ridge, they originated in the middle east and spread throughout Indo-Persia (Indian, Persian, Turky). In some Middle Eastern countries (Oman especially) jambiya are referred to as “khanjar”. Jambiya can be radically curved to almost straight.
It is accepted to consider that nomadic tribes traditionally needed longer blade type for protection against leopards and wolves that inhabited the area long time ago, this is how the longer-blade modification of khanjar was designed. Khanjar sits horizontally at the waist in front of the body and is worn in the areas of southern Saudi Arabia and some areas of the Hijaz.
This Arab Silver Khanjar Dagger is believed to be of the Hijazi type, mounted entirely in filigreed solid silver and set with red stones. The blade is broad, curved and double-edged with geometric engraved decoration at the base. The scabbard and wood and copper handle is wrought of filigreed silver (Tested positive as silver). Research indicates that it was made in Saudi Arabia during the latter part of the 19th century.
