Aqcha rugs (also known as Afghan Red) are a simpler verision of the Khal Mohammadi rug design. Locally sourced wool and chemical dyes are usually used. Afghan Aqcha Rugs are warm with dark, usually deep colors of reds and dark blue or black detail. The design elements of these rugs do vary but the pattern is often a form of repeated columns of ‘gul’ or ‘fil pai’ (elephant prints) which is an adaptation of the Ersari and Turkmen weavers’ heritage.

This perticular Afghan Aqcha Rug features a recurring Gul pattern, filling the field, surrounded by ram horn patterns (a symbol of power). The main border seems to be incorporating the Botteh symbol (representing flames or the universe).
